What is the RSA Certificate?
If you want to work as a bartender at a bar, hotel, club or pub in Australia, then you will need to get your Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA Certificate) accreditation. An RSA Certificate is the name that Australia have given to their alcohol server training as part of their national alcohol strategy to help tackle binge drinking.
Each state has it’s own requirements surrounding the RSA courses, which means that you may need to re-sit the RSA Course in another state if you are moving around the country.
There is some good news, however. QLD, SA, WA and NT have standardised their requirements which means that an RSA Certificate that has been issued in one of these states is valid in all of the others in that group. NSW will allow you to complete your RSA online, but it must be issued by a training provider in NSW. Victoria, on the other hand, won’t allow you to complete your training online at all.
Because of this, it’s very easy to get your certificate as there are a number of Registered Training Organisations that will allow you to complete your RSA online quickly and easily from your home.
For most people, an Online RSA Course is the quickest and easiest way to complete the required training and certification so that you can start working as a bartender.
Some of the online courses can be completed in a few hours and because of the efficiencies that an online learning environment provides, it makes them cheapest way to complete your RSA training.
There are also a number of training providers in each state that will allow you to attend a physical classroom, if you prefer to learn in that format.
On our site, we have a state-by-state guide to the State’s liquor licensing requirements as well any pricing information that we have been able to obtain from the providers, so you can find the Cheapest RSA course provider.
While completing the RSA training is not likely to teach you how to mix popular drinks or how to pull a beer, it will deal with the legal requirements that you need to know for working in the hospitality industry and serving alcohol. These include:
The responsible service of alcohol to patrons
Dealing with intoxicated and/or disorderly patrons
Knowing the laws related to selling alcohol in Australia
Your responsibilities and expectations as a server of alcohol in a licensed venue
Completing your RSA Certificate before applying for bar jobs is likely to increase your chances of gaining employment, as it’s one less requirement for your future employer to complete before you can begin working.
It’s fairly cheap and only takes a few hours to complete your Responsible Service of Alcohol training, and it provides you with a qualification that will allow you to work in a wide range of entertainment and hospitality venues in Australia.
The cost to complete the course is a minor expense if you’re looking to get work in a bar, and it will help separate you from many other applicants who have not completed their RSA. In such a highly competitive job market, can you afford not to have completed this training?
Let’s face it, pretty much all of us enjoy going to a bar. You might not even drink, but the social aspect of hanging out at a bar makes it an appealing social decision. The best thing after going to a bar though, is working in a bar!
Working in a bar is great. One of the oldest human professions, it’s a great way to earn a living when travelling around the world. Especially in Australia, where the bar culture is massive, it’s a great way to earn your keep while seeing the place.
It’s an extremely popular decision with travellers and students who want to earn a little bit of money on the side, while also getting experience in one of the most exciting environments in the world. However, in Australia, it’s not like the movies. You can’t just hop over the bar and start pouring drinks.
You need to show that you can be responsible and professional, by going through a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course. At the end of your training, you will be given a Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate which then allows you to take employment behind a bar.
It is mandatory to hold one of these certificates in Australia, as it allows you to work in any premises in the country that has a license to sell alcohol, without breaking any laws. However, this is not a year-long University course – this is a course you can take in the comfort of your own home as an online course, or as a face to face course in a number of private institutions.
If you are unsure of where to find a Responsible Service of Alcohol centre, then speak to a local bar owner – they will be sure to be able to put you in the right direction and will appreciate your forward thinking.
On the Responsible Service of Alcohol course, you are taught;
- About the safe drinking laws in Australia
- Understanding the strength of alcohol and the effects it can have on a person’s night and life
- Assisting a customer who has had too much to drink
- Industry regulation
- How to know when and when not, to refuse service to a customer on the grounds they have had too much alcohol
Aside from this, you should brush up on the following;
How to pour a proper pint of beer – Beer is massive in Australia, and it is a really perfectionist niche. If you thought pouring a beer elsewhere was tough, welcome to Australia! You need to be able to pull the perfect pint here, and the staff at the bar you work at will show you to do so.
Being versatile in your life – You need to know how to be ready to deal with different situations. Every day in a bar is different, you need to be able to work any time, any day, at short notice, and be ready to deal with a tirade of different situations all the time. It’s also important to teach yourself on the importance of treating people with respect and friendship, as this can drastically cut down on your confrontations with others.
If you are considering visiting Australia and need some money on the side, we highly recommend taking a Responsible Service of Alcohol course, you will not regret it.
One of the best ways to enjoy all that Australia has to offer is to backpack through the different states. These working holidays (see this page on the Immigration & Border Protection site for more details) are the perfect way to meet new people, explore new opportunities, yet still be able to hold down a decent job at the same time. Wait staff, bartenders, and other service positions are often filled by backpackers every season! If that sounds like fun to you, then you’ll want to consider obtaining your RSA Australia certification today.
Many States Allow For RSA Certification Online
If you’ve got about $50 and an hour to spend, that’s really all it takes to get your RSA certification. Many Australian states offer people in any walk of life the ability to learn what it takes to be responsible with alcohol online, including the required exam that you must pass to obtain the certification. Depending on your location, a multi-state RSA certification may also be available to you, letting you work anywhere as you travel.
There is NO Exception – You must have an RSA
To get a good job as a bartender while you’re backpacking, you’ve got to make the time to pick up your RSV Australia certification. The reasoning behind the RSA is simple: when people are employed in establishments that offer alcohol, the better educated they are about alcohol, the more likely they are to prevent over-intoxication. The ultimate goal? To stop drunk driving and the injuries or accidental deaths that occur because of such a terrible choice.
It doesn’t just stop at drunk driving prevention. Another goal behind the requirement of RSA Australia certification is that each employee can establish a safer, more enjoyable establishment. By recognizing the signs of over-intoxication early, alcohol service can be refused at the right time, allowing every patron to enjoy their time away from home.
Your RSA Australia Certification Lasts For 3 Years
If you could invest one hour, right now, in an effective online training program that could get you your RSA certification for the next three years, would you do it? Only Victoria and Tasmania require a face-to-face RSA course to be completed, which means you’ve got a good opportunity to have an extended work holiday as you explore Australia in your own unique way!
It’s easy to get started. First you must make sure that the training organization is authorized by the government to offer RSA certifications. From there, just make sure you have a working internet connection, about an hour of time to spare, and you’re ready to go. In return, you’ll get helpful educational resources, a downloadable temporary certificate when you pass, and the ability to work almost anywhere you want.
Australia is calling you… why not backpack your way through the country, get your RSA, and work as a bartender or a server? It’s a great way to explore the country and learn more about yourself.
If you’re looking for employment as a bartender, then you’re going to need to take an RSA course to qualify for that job. In some areas, successfully passing an RSA course is a pre-requisite to being apply to even apply for that job. In other areas, you have a 90 day probationary period to obtain your RSA. If you need to obtain your certification, you may qualify for an online class that can save you a lot of time.
Not All States Recognize Online RSA Courses
Tasmania and Victoria do not recognize the validity of online RSA courses, so taking these mandatory classes must be done in person. These school-based courses are available throughout Australia and provide certification for every state, as well as multi-state options when available. These classes, where are 4 hours each, will provide you with the knowledge that you need to pass the practical exam, which will lead to your certification.
For the states that do recognize the validity of an online RSA course, the online studying and testing will help you be able to obtain your needed certification. The advantage of the online course is primarily the time investment that you will need – online courses can often be completed in just about an hour. Compared to the four hour investment the in-person class requires, you won’t have to sacrifice half your day to get your certification.
Does an In-Person RSA Course have advantages?
An online RSA course can be completed much more quickly and provide you with online resources to study, but an in-person class allows you to get hands-on learning opportunities. Some people learn better through experiential methods and that’s what these in-person courses can provide. You must be able to pass the practical exam to get your certification, so if you learn better by experiencing things instead of viewing or reading things online, you may wish to make the time investment into an in-person course.
Some States Do Not Recognize Other State’s Certificates
If you do not have a multi-state RSA certification, then you may need to complete another RSA course if you move or work in a different state. Victoria is one of these states that will not recognize another RSA certification, but you can take a free online refresher RSA course to obtain a valid Victoria-issued certification.
It is important to know what your state’s RSA requirements happen to be. Some precincts also have specific regulations related to the RSA that must also be followed, including having a valid permit before applying for a job where RSA certification is mandatory.
There is no easier way to obtain your certification than through an online RSA course. If you qualify to take an online course, then take a look today to find a government approved vendor who can provide you with the education you need. Just think – you could be 48 hours away from having your temporary RSA permit and being able to apply for a good job. Why wait? Start today!
